Mariam Ouédraogo: a journalist for the voiceless
Mariam Ouédraogo, an exceptional journalist from Burkina Faso, embodies a deep commitment to social and human causes through her work as an investigative journalist. She was recently honoured in Washington with the prestigious 32nd Mohamed Maïga African Investigative Journalism Award for her tireless work on crucial issues such as human rights, the environment and access to information.The prize, named after the late Malian journalist Mohamed Maïga, highlights African journalists who, like him, devote their pens to defending the most disadvantaged and fundamental rights. A reporter for the Burkinabe daily Sidwaya, Mariam Ouédraogo has established herself as a leading figure in investigative journalism in Africa. Her work is distinguished by her determination to give a voice to the forgotten members of society: women, children and marginalised communities, particularly those affected by the security crisis in Burkina Faso. Through her investigations, she reveals realities that are often ignored, plunging into the heart of human suffering and the injustices that go with it. Her career has been marked by national and international distinctions, testifying to the impact of her commitment. In 2023, she became one of the few African journalists to receive the Knight International Journalism Award in the United States, a prestigious prize for outstanding journalism with a far-reaching impact. The previous year, she had already made history by becoming the first African woman to win the Bayeux Calvados-Normandie Prize for war correspondents, a distinction that reinforced her reputation as a courageous and determined journalist. In 2019, Mariam Ouédraogo was also hailed for her work in the fight against corruption, winning the Anti-Corruption Prize of the Réseau national de lutte anti-corruption (REN-LAC). In 2020, she was awarded the Prix Galian for best investigation, a further testament to her professionalism and rigour. And in 2023, for the third year running, she was awarded the Prix Marie-Soleil-Frère for the best Burkinabe journalist, in recognition of her growing influence in the Burkinabe media landscape.With a total of 21 awards to her name, Mariam Ouédraogo has become a leading figure in African journalism.

For several years, Media and Digital Africa has been committed to strengthening the media in Africa, by supporting the training of journalists, students and professionals in the field, as well as the production of quality content.Whether in the print, radio or digital media, every medium contributes to ensuring that information is free and accessible to all, promoting freedom of expression, the cornerstone of any democratic society. Our areas of action : The lack of training for media professionals has a direct impact on the quality of information disseminated, particularly online. Misinformation and fake news proliferate, eroding public confidence in the media. To remedy this, MDI supports training programmes aimed at strengthening the skills of those working in the sector and promoting quality journalism. Our proactive approach includes awareness-raising campaigns, partnerships with other organisations and the development of clear guidelines to guide our initiatives. In addition, we actively work to influence policies and regulations to promote diversity, equity and inclusion in media and digital. We are taking action to ensure that information is reliable and accessible to all, by developing fact-checking projects and training courses, supporting the media and raising public awareness of the issues surrounding disinformation. By training citizens in the tools for verifying information, we make them active players in the fight against fake news. MDI has set up a journalism scholarship programme to support emerging journalists from under-represented communities. This is to ensure that they are vehicles for truthful information.

Reporter Without Borders is calling for support for journalists covering women’s rights and gender-based violence
EuTambém in Brazil, #WoYeShi in China, #UnVioladorEnTuCamino in Chile #Masaktach in Morocco, via الناجيات_نصدق# in Egypt … For seven years, social networks and the press have been profoundly transformed by the publication, on 5 October 2017 in the New York Times, of the first investigation into the Harvey Weinstein affair. The #MeToo movement was launched in 2006 by the African-American activist Tarana Burke, and since then it has swept the world. In a report published on 21 October 2024, entitled « Journalism in the #MeToo era », Reporters Without Borders (RWB) looks at its impact on the media world : journalistic practices called into question, new media created, but also the dangers faced by journalists covering women’s rights. A total of 112 countries were surveyed, and over 80% of the 113 journalists questioned noted an increase in coverage of gender issues, sexual violence and women’s rights. The general press has also embraced this movement, creating new models of journalism and even inventing new professions such as gender editor, whose job is to ensure that the people chosen as sources are mixed, and to avoid sexist clichés in the choice of words and illustrations. Charters and codes of ethics have also proliferated to improve media coverage of sexist and sexual violence. These developments have been accompanied by an increase in training for journalists, as shown by the results of the RWB survey: 73% of the journalists questioned felt that they benefited from more training on these subjects. Despite this progress, more than a quarter of journalists consider that covering these subjects involves risks. Indeed, 60% of them have witnessed cyber-harassment of colleagues specialising in these areas. In authoritarian regimes such as Iran and Russia, journalists are driven to self-censorship or exile. The most serious cases recorded by RWB, such as the imprisonment of journalists in Afghanistan and the repression of those working in Iran and Russia, bear witness to the violence suffered by those covering women’s rights. « This is a widespread scourge in every corner of the world« , deplores Anne Bocandé, Editorial Director of RWB. An alarming finding emerges from the survey: 93% of journalists polled are unaware of any convictions for attacks on those investigating gender-based violence. « Even if progress has been made, the situation remains worrying« , says Anne Bocandé. At the end of its report, Reporter Without Borders makes sixteen recommendations to governments, platforms, newsrooms and police and judicial authorities, in order to provide the best possible support and guarantee the protection of journalists working on these issues.
